Thomas E. Meeks, 46, president of Local 1354 of the Textile Workers Union of America, resigned after an audit disclosed irregularities in funds kept by his wife, the treasurer. He accepted responsibility, saying the money was spent through ignorance and that he would replace the funds if needed.
Paul Lawton Wall 30 of 1004 West Third Ave faced a driving under the influence charge in Gastonia Municipal Court. He received 40 days suspended and was fined 100 dollars plus costs by Judge V E Shive. Other defendants include Frank Byrd 24 Myrtle St 30 days suspended and 100 dollars costs for reckless driving. Le David Curtis Ponder 27 Elkheart Ind paid 615 plus costs for speeding. Frank R Bailey 34 Shelby paid 5 plus costs for speeding. Samuel W Mauney 25 Pinkney Station paid costs for speeding. Tiane Hoyle 22 Lowell Negro paid 5 and costs for speeding and reckless driving and 5 for driving with expired license. Frances Lipscomb 31 12 East Franklin Ave paid 1 and costs for driving with expired license. Carrie Davis 20 Negro 422 North Brevard St paid costs for ABC law violation. Oliver Owensby 25 Dallas Rd drew 90 days suspended for resisting arrest and 30 days suspended for drunkenness.
Belmont man Frank Breedlove, 24, was accidentally wounded in the right shoulder when a 22 caliber rifle discharged Monday night. He was removed to Gastonia hospital by his brother Thad about 10 o'clock after the bolt-action firearm fired while being handled on the floor. Kenneth Davis and Patrolmen Frank Hope and Charles Scoggins investigated the Peach Orchard Hill incident.
Frank B. Howard of this city was called to Nashville Tennessee after the death of his brother James R Howard aged 44 who died of a heart attack Monday night at his home. The late Mr Howard was district manager for Lance Inc B Howard of Troutman, father of the victim, also suffered a heart attack after learning of the death but is improving Tuesday morning
Five Gastonia figures including Basil Whitener J W Atkins and Rev Clyde Murray share hopes for 1958. They emphasize world peace leadership in diplomacy and moral renewal, warning against communism and juvenile delinquency while urging faith unity and national progress.
A $35,500 civil suit was filed Monday with the Gaston County Clerk of Court. Frank Short, a passenger in a car wreck near the intersection of 12th Street and Maryland Avenue in Bessemer City on November 16, names Bobby P. Clark as defendant. A divorce suit was also filed by Drury L. Thompson against Mary Hilburn Thompson.

Mrs. Sadie Wise Chapman of Cherryville died Sunday at her home in Cherryville. Funeral services were held at 3 p m at Free Saints Tabernacle with burial in Cherryville city cemetery. Survived by two sons John and Walter Chapman and three daughters Mrs Ray Quinn Mrs Carl Hicks and Mrs J V Randall of Salisbury.
The Gastonia Zoning Commission decided not to hold a December meeting in line with years of practice. The next meeting is set for January 27, with regular sessions on the last Monday of each month. Forest Roberts serves as chairman.
Four Gaston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing seniors start a three month pediatrics affiliation at Children's Hospital in Washington D C. Names include Mrs Carolyn Alexander Britt Mrs Isabel Scott Golding Mrs Elaine Bunker Reeves and Miss Katie Faries. Four more seniors return this week from the same hospital after completing their pediatric affiliation.
Gaston County Health Department reports two Bessemer City R-1 children, Jimmy Childers, 13, and Shirley Anne Childers, 12, were treated at Gaston Memorial Hospital Sunday night for presumed hamburger meat poisoning. Health officials believe the meal was consumed in Georgia or South Carolina, most likely Georgia, after a weekend incident.

Two young Gastonians, Robert Steve Qualls and Billy Jerry Halk, were arrested Tuesday morning and charged with stealing five gallons of gasoline from a school bus at a Twinn Avenue home. Detectives Haskett and Bates identified them, with the suspects’ cases set for Monday in Gastonia city court.
William T. Tate of Bessemer City died Sunday at 6 p.m. after a weeklong illness. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Ward-Laye Funeral Chapel with burial in Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.
