Washington reports both sides expect Congress to legalize the closed shop again though Taft warns exact changes are uncertain. Taft suggests a substitute “closed union” ban may be sought, defining union shop versus closed shop and noting firing rules for nonmembers.
Albemarle man W. H. Manley told Charlotte police he was robbed of jewelry and clothing worth 600 dollars two weeks prior. He reported the incident Tuesday, detailing a loss that included valuable items.

In Durand Michigan a 23 year old wife and mother Domingo Rios reportedly confessed to beating her three week old daughter Dolores to death citing hatred of girls. Prosecutor Gerald McClear said an autopsy will shape whether charges are pursued. Rios admitted striking the child twice while in a crude crib. her husband Albert 31 found the infant unresponsive and took the baby to hospital.
Prof Albert Einstein is in the Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn for rest and observation. A spokesman said he is perfectly okay, smoking his pipe and working in bed as he recuperates after admission yesterday.

Cairo dispatch reports Ibrahim Abdul Hadi Pasha named premier after Mahmoud Fahmy Nokrashy Pasha. He pledges Egyptian unity, continues policy toward Israel, and cabinet is readjusted. Nokrashy Pasha was killed by a university student. the assassin is jailed.
Voters will decide on February 21 whether the legal sale of beer and wine should continue in Cabarrus County. The board of elections set the referendum date after certifying a petition from the drys.

In Yokohama a U.S. Eighth Army Commission sentenced nine Japanese officers to death for beheading 33 American fliers. Seventeen airmen were killed after Hirohito's surrender broadcast. sixteen others received prison terms. Seven defendants were acquitted. Witnesses testified the fliers were killed in retaliation for atomic bombings.
President Truman prepared to fly back to Washington after saying senior Soviet officials are eager for an understanding with the United States. He refused to name leaders behind the claim, fueling speculation about the politburo. The luncheon, honoring Eddie Jacobson, featured an un scripted talk on water policy.
