A picturesque six inch snowfall blanketed Gaston County on Christmas Day, delaying travel as streets iced over later. Weathermen mispredicted the storm, leaving roads to be cleared by crews while townsfolk enjoyed quiet celebrations and uneven heat supplies amid low fuel oil stock.
Washington reports that 1948 could bring record U. S. production and a potential easing of inflation if crops fare well, with factors including weather, labor relations, and foreign aid shaping the outlook. Dr. Edwin G. Nourse cites possible stability in prices if drought is avoided and exports adjust to demand.
President Truman may wait for the Republican convention to name its nominee before deciding his running mate for the 1948 ticket. Officials say a large field is under consideration including lawmakers, cabinet members, a Supreme Court justice, and other familiar Democratic figures. In northern Greece Gen Markos Vafiades and his anti government forces have not revealed their headquarters location after 72 hours of searches. Military officials say the insurgent leader cannot hold any area for more than 48 hours, while speculation grows over the absence of Nicholas Zachariades from the insurgent government.
Guerrilla forces pressed heavy attacks near the Albanian border as observers say the newly proclaimed Communist state consolidates territory in Northern Greece. Moscow trained Zachariades is seen as the real boss, with John Toannides deputy premier and key underground head, while Sophoulis predicts recognition from Albania, Yugoslavia.
Tokyo December 26 Hideki Tojo former prime minister at Pearl Harbor testified at the war crimes trial declaring the war was fought in self defense. His deposition read by attorney Lichiro Kiyose argued the decision to go to war was a last resort and the fate of Japan rested on that choice.
A 45 year old man, believed to have faced eviction, killed four people and wounded three in Greensboro then shot himself at a fire station after a spree that began with his landlord, the Martins, and extended to a grocery store and a home. Police described the sequence as a suicidal act after a mass shooting.

A fierce December typhoon hit Manila and central Philippines slashing coastlines and threatening a Europe bound freight passenger ship off Catandas Island. Rescue planes and tugs could not aid the distressed vessel due to ongoing severe weather conditions.
A savage typhoon swept the Philippines today leaving at least 56 dead or unaccounted for, including 46 from the Danish motorship Kina which sank off Samar. Five other ships damaged and Tacloban nearly wiped out by storm whipped fire, with parts of Manila hard hit.
Rock Hill banker C. L. Cobb and his wife were overcome by smoke from a burning sofa in their home. They were hospitalized and reported recovering satisfactorily. Firemen said the sofa caught fire after they had retired, and the interior suffered fire and smoke damage.
