Officials say about 400 U S citizens are prisoners in North Vietnam with around 1,500 missing or unaccounted for.
Vatican dispatch reports Pope Paul VI on Christmas Day urged global peace and an end to conflicts including Vietnam and the Middle East. He prayed for a truce and reconciliation, expressing compassion for victims and calling for humanitarian aid as Rome observed multiple Masses.
AP reports American battlefield deaths in Vietnam fell to a nine week low, raising total U S fatalities to about 39,203 by week end. The conflict’s toll for South Vietnamese and enemy forces also climbed, with government losses near 97,952 killed and 217,247 wounded, while enemy fatalities reached roughly 584,570 since January 1, 1961.
Israeli warplanes attacked Egyptian targets in southern and central Suez regions. An Israeli spokesman said all planes returned safely, while Egypt claimed to have shot down some aircraft. The strikes marked a seventh straight day of air raids as Jordanian and Israeli artillery exchanged fire near the Dead Sea. A Palestine guerrilla commander reported wounded troops and the destruction of tanks and ammunition. The Daber Al Ahrar news agency noted Arab summit talks ended without a communique, Egypt’s Nassr pivoted to broader Arab military support.
In Camp Oragle, Vietnam, Hope and his musical troupe entertained over 15,000 soldiers Christmas Eve. Connie Stevens joined on stage, prompting a standing ovation as Hope urged troops to return to school after their tours. Soldiers asked about U.S. role in Vietnam. Hope rebutted with a serious, hopeful message.
