The Obis, a Salem voyage, endures deaths from the first whale sighting and later crew turmoil as steward Blageen steals rum and dies by suicide. Captain Jered Naish is badly injured during a whale encounter while the crew fights scurvy and peril at sea. Atlanta Opens Golf Courses To All Negroes
Atlanta moves to desegregate its Bobby Jones municipal golf course after a federal judge’s order and a Supreme Court ruling. Mayor William Hartsfield said swimming pools and playgrounds remain segregated. Plaintiffs Dr. H. M. Holmes Alfred Holmes and Oliver W. Holmes filed suit in 1951 for denied admission. The city must pay $100 to the three plaintiffs.
