Wenly Yoshimura, Patricia Hearst's former roommate, left Santa Rita jail Friday thanking the judge and Japanese American community. She spoke softly, urging solidarity with friends still imprisoned and in the Third World, as reporters noted visible emotion.
Justice Jahin Paul Stevens took the oath Friday to uphold equal justice for the poor and rich as William O. Douglas watched from a wheelchair. President Ford, who nominated Stevens, stood beside Chief Justice Warren Burger at the Supreme Court table. Stevens, 35, had served as a judge on the appeals court.
Washington AP report on Sense Intelligence Committee action to obtain Ford's approval to publish public and covert CIA reports. Details include CIA activity in Italian elections and U S aid to Angolan factions, with votes and blackout handling noted.
The Justice Department asked the U.S. Circuit Court of the District of Columbia to reverse a lower court ruling blocking postal rate increases set for December 28 and January 3. It urged a stay of the ruling pending appeal, warning that upholding the block would deprive the Postal Service of about seven million dollars daily and could force a congressional appropriation.
