Claude Wilcox, 52, from Greensboro, pedals to Knoxville for Christmas. He carries eight sardines, pork and beans, a frying pan, two lights, and a tent. He trusts no welfare aid, hopes to reach Knoxville before Christmas carols, and endures a crippled foot and injured stomach while relying on water and coffee.
Albert G. Myers Jr president of the Piedmont Council Boy Scouts of America announced the council has employed Howard T. Smith of Daytona Beach Florida as district executive for Burke McDowell Polk and Rutherford counties. Smith will report January 1 1959 and live in Rutherfordton. He previously served as field Scout executive in Central Florida Council Orlando since September 1955. He is a Georgia Military Academy graduate and has military and business background. He is active in Daytona Methodist Churchs men’s club and has previously worked as Scoutmaster in Clearwater Florida. He will be introduced at district meetings January 3 6 13 and 19 and at the council meeting January 22 in Hickory. Smith is single.
A Gastonia girl, Carol Kinley, 54 Brown Street, was struck on Brown Street near Arlington Mill around 8 p m Friday and suffered a fractured and lacerated leg. The driver, William Paul Cook, 32, of Bessemer City, said the girl stepped into the path of his eastbound car. she was taken to Garrison General Hospital. Another witness, James C. Clark, 38, Wixey supervisor, was treated for a lip cut and chest discomfort after a separate early Saturday morning collision on West Franklin Avenue involving two cars, each damaged about $300.

A colorful Christmas party was held for the children of all wards at the Orthopedic Hospital from 7 o clock Friday night. The Delts Psi Sigma chapter of Belts Sigma Theta Sorority sponsored the event, an annual project. Children received stockings, ice cream, and gifts while Christmas music played in each ward. Mrs. Allen Ford Watson led the program.
The nation sees automation push forward with factory output rising while employment shifts to services. Since the war, jobs increased by 7,300,000 though only 10 percent were in production. Nearly half of today’s jobs did not exist 23 years ago, born from new products, industries and wants. Walter Henson Sr a longtime Mount Holly resident died suddenly at his home Friday night. He worked 34 years with Duke Power Company, most at the Mountain Island plant. He was active in First Methodist Church civic affairs Lions Club Masonic Lodge Oasis Temple and American Legion. Survivors include wife Willie Maee Henson two children W G Henson Jr of Mount Holly and Mrs H M Foster of Charlotte four brothers J W Henson Chester D C Charles Wonson Coover Arthur Henson and a sister Mrs B A Garrison and Mrs C K Graham. Funeral at First Methodist Church with Rev T H Swafford and Dr J G Hugin officiating burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Body at Mount Holly Funeral Home until an hour before services.
Leslie O. McCallum, longtime Gastonia city schools music director, was surprised Friday by Ashley High School Band members who presented him a trophy as he entered rehearsal. McCallum, a Petoskey Michigan native who studied at DePauw, began directing in 1929 and has led bands to 12 first ratings in state contests, while also playing violin with the Charlotte Symphony.
An American spokesman said top pay for pilots would rise from 1602 to 2334 monthly if the company’s offer is accepted. In the EAL strike machinists have approved a settlement by vote while the dispute between Eastern and engineers remains in mediation.
