A patrol boat drags the Ohio River today to recover victims of the Silver Bridge collapse. Nineteen bodies have been recovered with 42 still missing. Federal and state officials, aided by a consulting firm, assess causes while Ohio and West Virginia inspect other bridges and plan safety measures. President Roosevelt promised federal aid to restore traffic and aid a new bridge. The incident prompted inspections of nearby crossings and traffic adjustments on region routes.
Dr Sunsiel H. Sheppard has been reinstated to practice osteopathic medicine in Ohio but plans no active return. Attorney Benjamin Clark said Sheppard learned of the reinstatement after filing in November. He now resides in Europe and has applied to join the Peace Corps, with a last known address in West Germany.
A spill of 2800 degree molten pig iron at Armco steel mill in Houston killed three men and injured 17 others. Leo Bell age 53 and Houston resident Krenger 93 died after burns, Norman B Doss 49 died early today. About 449 workers were present. cause cited as a bent arm and crane mishap lifting the ladle to the hearth.
Economists say the nation’s economy is rebounding strongly from strikes and expanding at a pace that could push Congress to consider higher taxes. November data show rising personal income, production and home building, with unemployment falling, supporting the administration’s case for a 10 percent income tax surcharge. Analysts view the reports as favorable for resuming efforts before the House Ways and Means Committee around January 22.
