Gastonia officials approved a comprehensive traffic ordinance to curb congestion on Main avenue with two hour meters on Franklin avenue and one hour meters on the uptown curb. The plan limits off Main at Marietta and South streets and adds walk signals at those intersections while keeping York Chester Dallas Falls streets as two way. Through streets include Long avenue with stop signs at outlets, and mid block pedestrian cross ways removed on three Main avenue blocks.

Former Gastonia fire chief George McLaughen told the city council that firefighters are soliciting refilling orders for extinguishers, claiming it harms private business. City Manager Roberts says such orders are unauthorized and that firemen assist in inspections and advise when extinguishers are empty. The meeting also covered debt forgiveness, insurance appraisals, railroad depot relocation, and municipal projects.
Gartonia city government accepted bids totaling 21448 for construction of Fire Station No 3 at Webb Street and West Franklin Avenue. On a motion by Councilman Roosevelt Parks and a second by Councilman W. T. Spencer the bids were approved.

A portable X ray machine was purchased and presented to the North Carolina Orthopaedic Hospital by the Frank Goldberg Foundation and the Gastonia Tiny Tim Society. Ellen Black noted it will aid operating room use and bedside X rays, and thanked the donors on behalf of the hospital.

Transactions include Essie Hollar's adjoining property in River Bend township, Mason McLean and Aliie Mason parcels, Virginia Desartman to David Rankin, W S Sawyer to Trad Smith nine lots in Frank Halt subdivision, and several other transfers among locals in Gastonia, Crowders Mountain, South Point, and surrounding areas.
Union Presbyterian Church hosts a Christmas program Behold This Child on Sunday night with a Joy Gift collection. Women of the Church meet after Sunday school in the Ladies' classroom. Young people plan a Christmas dinner party at the church Saturday at 7. Personal notes include Mr and Mrs Wilson hosting Freddie’s birthday dinner. R C Ratchford is ill at home. Willie Sharpe Jr and Elizabeth Durham were married on Sunday December 16 in York County. Sharpe is from Ranto and Durham is daughter of Mr and Mrs Leroy Durham of Ranto. They will reside in Ranto. Christmas Seals Reports largely from churches and schools, total raised $120 so far in Gaston county, with multiple churches and schools contributing. Reports urged by December 24 to chairmen or the Gaston County Tuberculosis Association offices. Illness Mrs S Mitchell of Gatesville is seriously ill. Highland Program The Highland school Christmas program set for Thursday at 8 pm after weather delay.
About 250 Matthews-Belk employees plus guests attended the annual Christmas Party in the store. The program featured carols, a prayer, eulogies for the late J H Matthews, and a portrait gift to the Matthews family unveiled by Houston Matthews III. Country hams were shared with Mrs J H Matthews and family.
Mr and Mrs J P Gilliam entertained Tuesday night at a Christmas dinner at 818 West Rankin avenue for Mr and Mrs Samuel Gillam of Roanoke Virginia among 16 guests from Statesville were Mr and Mrs Baxter Finch and Fred Ghambee. The center table featured a Yule motif with red decor.
Evon L. Moss 37 of Lincolnton R-3 was placed in county jail Monday on a drunken driving charge. Other bookings included George Tyler 27 on a bad check count and Betty Sue Shook 24 of 210 North Weldon Street for assault. The report also mentions various holiday party activities and local notices.

The Air Force awarded Pratt and Whitney a contract to develop a nuclear aircraft engine at East Hartford Connecticut as part of an early push for atomic powered planes. The move follows an AEC contract with General Electric for aircraft reactor development.
