John A. Smith recorder of Bessemer City and ex-mayor, a Republican candidate for Congress, was severely beaten by Willis Woodel, Harbormouth Company mill worker, in a dispute over payment in front of Bessemer City hall. Woodel reportedly left unarrested after the attack. Smith required medical dressing for facial wounds.

Milas Partlow, a negro sought in York Gaston and Mecklenburg counties for various crimes, is jailed in Charlotte after identification by Gastonia and York officers. He faces a suspected October 19 wreck attempt on the C N W No 10 at Crowders Creek trestle and rewards totaling over 400 dollars. He is also wanted for disposal of mortgaged property and awaits division of rewards before Gastonia trials.

Death at Old Mill Claims Mrs Harmon at 412 North Mill
Mrs. George D Harmon died yesterday at 10 AM at her home 412 North Mill Street near the Old Mill from blood poisoning. She was about 20 and survived by her husband. Funeral services were held at the home this morning at 10 conducted by Rev. W C Barrett of First Baptist, with interment in Hollywood cemetery. Mr Harmon works as an operative at the Old Mill.

Mrs Martha Jenkins Dies After Months of Cancer
Mrs Martha Jane Jenkins, wife of Nathan D Jenkins, died at 8 p m at her Dunn Mill home after a long cancer illness. Born January 11 1851 she was about 62. Survived by her husband, daughter Nannie Dover, five brothers and a half brother. Funeral at 1 30 this afternoon followed by burial at Long Creek Baptist Church where she had long been a member.
