Akers Trucking Firm Expands Under John Akers Leadership

John Akers, leading a trucking company started in 1933, has transformed it from 12 trucks to a 92-terminal operation with 558 drivers and 431 local drivers. Revenue is projected near 4 million with assets around 20 million as the firm grows its Charlotte terminal and Gaston County base, while earning safety awards and national recognition.

Akers sale shifts NC transportation firm to new leadership

Akers is sold to a management group led by Marvin Lourie and Victor De Marras after years of family oversight. W. W. Akers’ heirs, including Wren and Scott Akers, are stepping back as the company grows from Georgia to Massachusetts with about 2300 pieces of equipment and more than 2060 employees. The new owners, formerly tied to PepsiCo holdings and North American Van Lines, promise to expand nationwide while keeping the Akers name.

Henderson acquitted in My Lai case after Lt Calley found guilty

Lt Calley was the only soldier convicted for the My Lai slaughter, sentenced to life then reduced to 20 years. Col Oran Henderson, the highest ranking officer tried, was acquitted of cover up and other charges after a trial at Ft Meade. Several other defendants were dropped or acquitted as the Army wound down its prosecutions from the 1968 attack.

Nixon stands in for Nixon in North Carolina primary

In Charlotte the chair of North Carolina politics says visits by Nixon are banned during the capital city period. Jonas Jr. notes the state congressional delegation may decide if Nixon appears on the May 6 presidential primary ballot. Under the law the Board of Elections must enter candidates and the candidate must pay $1.00 or be struck. Jonas says a stand-in for Nixon has been decided.

Mill pay hike at Springs Mills may raise wages

Springs Mills announced a wage increase for its 14 000 hourly paid employees effective January 23. The spokesman did not disclose the amount but said the raise would be within Pay Board guidelines. The textile chain operates 23 mills in South Carolina and North Carolina.

Robbery Reports Rise in Charlotte This Month

Police report two armed robberies in Charlotte so far this month with a storefront owner wounded. Clyde Mee dearis, 49, who runs a furniture and jewelry store, was outside with his wife when a man shot, as Mee dearis tried to duck around a car.

Bahakel shifts to state senate bid in 1972

CHARLOTTE AP reports C N Bahakel, who lost a Democratic bid for Congress two years ago, will not run for Washington but will seek the North Carolina state Senate in 1972. The Gastonia Gazette notes the change in political plan and lists local publication details and carrier service information.
