Eight known dead and at least 35 missing after the 1,780 foot bridge linking Point Pleasant West Virginia and Kataoga Ohio collapsed amid heavy traffic. Divers worked in 40 degree murky water as authorities planned a full investigation and a temporary morgue was set up in Point Pleasant. Names identified include George McManus Cecil Counts Melvin Cantrell and Leo Blackman with more victims feared.
The United States and six European nations pledge to keep the price of gold at 35 dollars an ounce as they oppose speculative buying in Europe. Officials say the London gold market will continue unchanged and central banks will act to defend the dollar and gold value.
In Grants and across the Navajo Reservation a four day winter storm crippled much of the Southwest. About 200 Navajo Indians picking pine nuts north of Pinon were marooned with improvised shelters. Rescue teams used tracked vehicles as authorities warned of a new storm. Surviving travelers along I-40 and US 66 waited for word while officials worried about more snow and the safety of isolated communities.
In Harmony North Carolina AP reports the Harmony American Legion Post staged a last minute bunny loop. About 20 hunters with dogs and sticks failed to bag many rabbits as the press outnumbered the participants. The event ended around 4 PM after a 9:30 AM start.
Samuel Ellis of Winston-Salem 20 escaped with facial and head cuts after the bridge over the Ohio River collapsed. North Carolina truckers William Needham Jr. and Harold Cundiff were reported missing, with Needham hospitalized for a back fracture. Another survivor, Frank Nunn of Greenville, was treated for a back injury. R. M. Lowe was missing. The disaster left rescuers amid chaotic, dark waters as trucks sank and floated debris.
CAPE TOWN AP Louis Washkansky who received a historic heart transplant is reported to have pneumonia a hospital spokesman said Saturday night The infection affects one lung and may not affect the transplant Doctors noted the condition is not cause for alarm and that doctors would monitor for signs of organ rejection Washkansky is being treated with penicillin and immunosuppressive therapy to prevent rejection and fend off infection
