Mecklenburg County's 57th Road Death Sets Year Record

Cheryl Leigh Bartlett, 1, of Mint Hill, becomes Mecklenburg County's 57th traffic fatality of 1959, surpassing Wake's 56. She was struck as she crossed a Mint Hill street Monday night. The driver, James Leslie Riddle, 48, of Asheboro, left the scene with no charges filed.

Five Juveniles Escape From Vance County Prison Truck

Five first offenders escaped a prison truck in Franklin County as a station wagon was reported stolen nearby. The youths named Willie Knight 17 Sanford Kenneth Vadase 16 Raleigh Jay Lee Deal 17 Durham Melvin Hunt 17 Durham Leroy Owen 17 High Point fled from the vehicle and were at large.
