Death Row Prisoner Granted New Trial
A North Carolina Supreme Court granted Roy Franklin Oakes a new trial after finding errors in the jury instruction and trial judge's rulings. Oakes, 25, of Randleman, was sentenced to death for the first degree murder of his wife Alice Mae Oakes, who was shot dead March 6 in Greensboro. The justices ordered a new trial despite a Guilford Superior Court jury’s 25 minute deliberation.
