More than 100 Gaston Lincoln Duke alumni and guests attended the association banquet at Gaston Country Club. Malcolm McDermott urged alumni to support Duke as the power source behind enlightenment, noting current challenges to university endowments and independence. Officers announced include C S Clege president and Leila Howell Carpenter elected to the alumni council. Nat C. White will speak at Armstrong Memorial Presbyterian Church Sunday morning.
Imre Kovacs, a Balkans expert and singer, will speak at 7 p m in the Masonic Temple on Balkanitis the complex politics of 23 European states and their impact on the continent. Reservations through Brice T Dickson, Gastonia Chamber of Commerce secretary treasurer.
Sheriff officers rounded up four men and seized 52 gallons of white liquor in a Friday sweep. Louie John Flum, 67, was arrested after 50 gallons were found at his Crowders Mountain farm. Two brothers William Alexander 21 and Clarence Alexander 35 were charged with prohibition violations. James Cloud 26 cab operator was jailed on conspiracy and prohibition charges. Flum released on 500 dollar bond. others to be bonded.
A charge of temporary larceny of an automobile against Robert H. Cook in Union South Carolina was dismissed after the owner dropped the case. The car, sold by Walker Motor Company to a Union taxi driver, was returned to the owner. Officials said the charge arose from technical points and that the purchaser failed to make payments. Cook's connection to the Walker Motor Company is noted.
Mill & Marine Electric Inc of Gastonia has won about $10,000 for electrical work on the Ebinport consolidated school in York County near Rock Hill. The firm also secured a contract for a Rockingham public schools cafeteria and is doing wiring for a Southern Bell toll building in Rock Hill, about $75,000, under manager F C Michael who oversees all contracts.
New York on December 10 reports a tentative rise in fair trading with most issues higher yet modest. Admiral Corp shows life early with an 18 opening and 1 3/4 gain before fading. Strength appears in U S Steel Youngstown Sheet Chrysler Montgomery Ward United Aircraft Zenith American Telephone and others while Bethlehem Steel National Steel U S Rubber Woolworth Philco and several majors retreat.
Cotton futures in New Orleans fell amid weekend liquidation and hedge selling. Closing prices were 5 to 35 cents lower with quiet trade as merchants absorbed mainly by trade buying against export sales. Spot cotton dropped 25 cents per bale with 15/16 inch fibers at 28.75 cents per pound. Local sales totaled 1,838 bales.
New York cotton futures slipped 4 to 25 cents from the prior close as Dec and March contracts opened at about 30.30 and 30.21 respectively. Prices showed a mixed session with lows near 30.17 and 30.18 and a steady drift downward through the day.
Handel's Messiah will be presented in two concerts on December 18 at the First Baptist Church. Soprano Nettie Rayle Gidney and contralto Elizabeth Tavis Hamrick are joined by tenor Charles Pesta and baritone Robert T. Tavis Jr. for the Shelby staged event with over 100 chorus voices under Joe D. Hamrick.
Weekend law violations began Friday night as city police arrested 25 people including 11 charged with drunkenness. Three Black men Will Lowery 40 Novella Lowery 31 and Johnnie Jackson 32 on North Pryor street were charged with assault on Evans Lawrence Miller 41 of 420 East Fifth Avenue charged with assault on a female Betty Sue Walls of East Fifth Avenue Addison Holland 7 of the county and Dorothy Mae Dreher 17 of North Avon street were booked for disorderly conduct.
City mailed statements to dozens of property owners for street paving done last year under Brown Paving Co. Assessments vary by lot size, street topography, and extra costs such as sewer taps, water taps, and driveways. Water taps $30.04, sewer taps $35.90, driveway $22. Paving costs per foot ranged from $3.93 to $34 with differences due to grading and curb and gutter work. Some residents faced higher charges on Patrick Street and lower on Belvedere Street. a legal petition threshold of 51 percent of lots and 61 percent of footage governs paying.
In municipal court next week Ernest Warren argues against Solicitor Oscar Mason over the right to drink liquor at home. The opening round favored Mason as witnesses testified against John Chambers 53 of 713 North Falls Street for possessing and drinking white whiskey.
Preliminary hearing in the case of Oscar Armstrong 56 Negro of 210 Lennox Street was postponed until January 14. Armstrong is charged with the murder of his wife Lucille Armstrong 24 found unconscious on the C&NW railroad tracks about midnight August 30. She died hours later. Armstrong denies killing his wife though officers say an investigation placed him near the scene. he is free under $2,1500 bond.

Three Negro passengers sustain injuries after a collision with a car carrying deaf mutes from the North Carolina School for the Deaf at Morganton. The other driver, John Wesley McBeth of Charlotte, said a car pulled from a side road into his path east of Belmont crossroads. Injured: J. B. Ballard, Frank Cunningham, and James Dobson.
Lincoln Academy choir performs Sunday night at 9 45 at Adams Memorial Presbyterian Church. They will sing portions of The Messiah and a selection from St Cecilia Mass with other sacred pieces. Also notes that soybean once considered sacred grain in China.
