Paris reports end of the Communist led General Confederation of Labor strikes thatidle 2 to 3 million workers at peak. Government terms accepted, workers return with many still unsettled. clashes with Russia escalate as relations sour over wage and price controls.
Lt. Arthur T. Moore of Raleigh spoke to about 30 Gaston and Lincoln county automobile dealers at Leventis restaurant about the upcoming 1948 mechanical inspection program. The new law requires annual inspection with five posts and a final pass or fail, with a red diamond rejection marker.
Doctor James C. McLeod, runner up to J Strom Thurmond in the last South Carolina governor race, died in Florence at 10 45 p m after a heart attack. He was 50, survived by his widow, two sons and two daughters. He led the South Carolina Medical Association in 1946 47 and was a Florence Rotary Club past president. He studied at the University of North Carolina and Cornell Medical College. He was born in Florence and died at the McLeod Infirmary founded by his father.
Western diplomats say Russia seeks 10 billion dollars in reparations from Germany to be paid largely from current production, risking collapse of the Big Four foreign ministers talks. Molotov’s stance on economic unity hinges on reparations. Marshall and Bevin oppose priority for reparations, fearing subsidies to Russia. French anger grows over Saar questions and stalled economic integration.
Evans and George Truman landed at Teterboro Airport New Jersey at 10 10 a m completing a 25000 mile globe circling flight in tiny 100 horsepower fabric covered planes. The pace averaged 105 mph as a fighter escort accompanied the final lap from Harrisburg with Evans finishing moments before Truman.

Arab Jewish clashes in Palestine escalate with 120 dead and many missing as British forces enforce curfews with shoot to kill orders. Attacks kill three Jews near Gaza and a Jewish policeman in Haifa. Armored cars and police actions spread across Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Jaffa.
A broad band of snow extended northward across Missouri Iowa Minnesota Illinois Wisconsin and parts of Indiana and Michigan while freezing rain plagues travel in the lower Mississippi and Ohio valleys. Rain also fell across parts of the Gulf states as temperatures rose from sub zero levels yesterday.
A large Army C-54 transport crashed about midnight eight miles north of Goose Bay Labrador in freezing wilderness. Reports say the passenger list is undetermined with no known survivors though some accounts cite 29 aboard including crew. Rescue teams faced rugged terrain as Maj. Gen. Turner directed operations from Goose Bay.
Washington December 10 Republicans moved to sideline Harriman anti inflation bill while seeking a GOP program. Taft indicated reluctance to push the measure which would allow rationing and allocations of scarce goods. Democratic officials doubted any broader anti inflation plan would be offered.
