An exhibit of about 100 pictures by private art pupils of Miss Ruth Torrence runs this week at Gaston County Public Library. Youngest artist is five. works span oils, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, and crayon from summer and fall. Notable pieces include Richard McCorkle’s copy of Bye Boy and a ship scene, plus Cate Vaughn’s still life of white violets and apple blossoms. Most works shown in the children's section with some in the entrance hallway. all are open to the public nightly until 9. Exhibitors include Joe Williams, Melvin Wallace, Kenneth Beam, Marcia Robbins, Bobby Culp, Johnny Jones, Dale Vaughn, and many others. adult exhibitors listed as Mesdames Florence Young, Christine States, Flora Morrow, Jene Gurney, Edith Lewis, Mary Lewis Craig, and Dan Haynes.
The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, said federal seizure power over gambling devices requires proof they were shipped across state lines. The ruling upheld dismissal of charges against two Georgia dealers who sold such devices without AG registration and voided attempts to seize five machines from a Tennessee country club.
CHICAGO Cook County authorities planned to press for criminal charges today against a 28 year old grocer whose wife and three children were found dead after a fire in their basement. Vincent Ciucel, hospitalized with severe burns, said he tried to rescue his wife Anne 28 and their children Virginia 9 Angeline 4 and Vincent Jr 9. Coroner Walter E McCarron said he will ask a grand jury to return a verdict of murder. Irwin Bloch state attorney released a statement saying circumstantial evidence is strong. Clucei denied knowledge of the shootings but acknowledged owning a 22 firearm found in the ruins. Police said Amora mother of four month old girl says Ciucel is the father. He told police he awoke to find the apartment aflame and rushed out to summon aid and save his family.
In Cambridge England a British Methodist leader Dr Donald Soper clashed with a minister over American forces. The exchange touched on Americans building schools and the presence of U S troops, with Soper joking about Russia workers and the church’s view of occupation. The crowd questioned why the Americans stay.
