A Duke University nutrition professor Dr. William John Dann aged 44 died after months of illness. British born in Bath, he joined Duke 13 years ago and studied pellagra and vitamin deficiency diseases. He helped introduce the term vitamins in nutrition. Survivors include his widow and four children. The body was cremated.
Chinese Communist radio reported an air tight encirclement of the Nationalist Suchow garrison as Red forces keep up pressure in the Nanking area. The garrison of about 25 000 troops abandoned Suchow and is attempting to reach the trapped governments south of the Suhsien sector. The broadcast claimed 20 000 government troops annihilated and warned of total wipeout if surrender does not occur. Communists mass across the Suchow front with 125 000 soldiers under Gen Chen Yi and appear to be converging from multiple directions.
Donora Pennsylvania experienced another smog episode over the weekend with few complaints from residents. Charles Stacey, board of health president, said asthma victims reported mild effects but no serious harm. Investigators continued to seek the October fog’s cause, which killed 19 residents and sickened many.
A Navy search near Johnston Island located a downed C-54 with 37 aboard after engine trouble forced ditching about 1 000 miles southwest of Honolulu. Air Rescue units spotted signals and flares, dropped a boat toward survivors, while Captain Allen H. Spotts reported low fuel and headed back to Hickam Field as other planes moved in.
Washington dispatch reports the House Un-American Activities Committee plans to present grand jury with alleged definite and shocking proof of a Red spy network in the State Department before the war. Investigators led by William A. Wheeler will turn over copies of secret papers to the grand jury, tied to Whittaker Chambers and the Communist underground in Washington. The hearings may resume behind closed doors. Joseph Egan dies in Paris at American Hospital.
Governor-elect Kerr Scott, back from a Florida vacation, answered questions from Capitol Will. He confirmed writing to resignations sought from W Vance Baise and Charles Z Flack, said he did not request other resignations, and stated he did not attend Nov 22 26 Advisory Budget Commission meetings. He believed his inauguration date was Jan 6.
PARIS December 6 The United Nations political committee was urged by Peter Fraser to prove that the North Korean government is free. Fraser demanded evidence of a democratic regime and noted U N observers supervised South Korean elections that produced the Korean Republic. He condemned Soviet attacks on election methods and accused those blocking Korea inquiries of disloyalty to the United Nations.
In York County a 34 year old former Rock Hill truck driver Nathan T Corn was chosen for murder trial in the death of George C Beam Jr. The jury visited a local Bear business warehouse as part of the case while spectators including Beam’s father and mother watched. About 40 witnesses were expected as the trial began with Judge J Henry Johnson presiding and could run most of the week.
Atlanta December 6 Two state troopers were ordered to escort Amy James Mallard to Lyons Georgia where she would swear out murder warrants charging three white men with the ambush slaying of her husband Robert Mallard. Capt Delmar Jones said the troopers would provide protection for the widow on the tip to Lyons. Mallard was killed about 18 miles from Lyons Now. Five men were on suspicion of murder but two were released. all five denied any connection to Mallard's death.

West Branch Michigan December 6 1939 a teen age boy Wil lam Lee Farley described as a perfect gentle man faced possible first degree murder charges in the rifle slaying of his mother Prosecutor Melvin G Orr said he would seek waiver of jurisdiction to try the youth as an adult Farley admitted firing at least three bullets into his mother's body after a quarrel over selling Christmas cards.

He faulted the Greek army for not making a determined push after summer victories and noted that prospects to eliminate the guerrillas faded despite over 170 thousand dollars worth of American arms and supplies. The Greek effort suffers a stalemate, while Turkish aid shows progress in strengthening defenses against communism.
Western Berlin held a pivotal city election as the Socialist party surged to power with 64.5 percent of the vote amid a 86.4 percent turnout of eligible voters. Communists boycotted in the Soviet sector, while Western Berliners faced threats and blockades to vote for freedom against Communism.
Two prospective draftees James Anderson Lane of Pinckney Station and Ernest Clemmer of Carter Station did not report as Gastonia sent a group to pre induction exams in Charlotte Monday morning. Mrs Dona Mel Dandel, draft board clerk, said twelve of fourteen reported, with 28 more scheduled for Tuesday. County induction quota for January will be chosen from these groups. nonreporting pre inductees face FBI action after 10 days. Gaston’s December 1 quota of 13 is noted along with local event calendar entries.
