County Workers To Receive 2 Percent Bonus This Year

County auditor Claude Dent explains bonus checks worth 2 percent of annual pay will be mailed only to employees not receiving a pay raise this year. The county commissioners recently voted to end Christmas bonuses for most staff, instead granting a five percent raise in some departments. Holidays set include December 23 to 27 and January 2 off. January 9 meeting postponed.

Curious Savage cast features Gastonia actors and regional talent

STATeesseers Hears is a judge who has. and more decisions reversed than any other member of the judici ary. Last year Keith was Paul the fellow who was bitten by a snake in My Three Angels. He is employed at Jay Williams Inc. Titus Savage is sober, well dressed, and is a great obstructionist in congress. Meek Carpenter plays this part in Gastonia Little Theater debut after five years in Kings Mountain productions. He is resident of Gastonia and chief chemist at Foote Mineral Co. in Kings Mountain. The Curious Savage is directed by William F. Young of Bessemer City with Martha Lee Lucas and others in the cast.

Mrs Holland Burned By Gas Range Flame

Mrs Thelma Holland assistant manager of the credit bureau of the Gaston County Merchants Association suffered first and second degree burns Monday morning when her blouse caught fire from a gas range burner. She extinguished the flames in the shower and was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital then released for treatment. She is the wife of Jim Holland of Gastonia Motor Parts Inc.

Tax collections exceed 1.3 million in 1955 levy

County tax collections for 1955 have surpassed 1,300,000, about 63 percent of the levy. Glaude Dent, county auditor, says collections are running near last year, with more than half the levy paid in prepayments. Refund checks will be mailed soon to taxpayers who overpaid after early payments at 1.15 rate. Mackiner assistant auditor notes delays from a recent outside audit.

Negro Convicted Of Knife Assault In Gastonia Trial

In Gastonia Municipal Court, Jake McDaniel, 23, a Clover, South Carolina, Negro, was found guilty after a lengthy trial of knife assault on Verlee Montgomery, 28, of 406 North Brevard Street. Judge Julius T. Sanders fined McDaniel $25 and the costs for the September 24 altercation on South Street. Montgomery, employed by Wilson Transfer, had accused McDaniel, an employee of Gaston Memorial Hospital, of running around with his wife.

Fire Breaks Out In Patton Home

Fire damaged the kitchen at John Patton’s home 925 East Fourth avenue when an oil stove broke out Sunday afternoon around 4:27. The fire department brought it under control with considerable damage.
