Nanking Defense Line Seeps Under Communist Pressure
Chinese Communist pressure eased abruptly on Nankings new defense line north of the capital as Communist forces reportedly turned north to meet 250000 government troops. Refugees fled Shanghai as a steamship carrying 400 passengers sank near the Yangtze river mouth with 5000 feared drowned. Kiangya survivors numbered under 700. Government quarters predicted the battle south of Suchow would decide Eastern China fate, with Suchow troops possibly breaking free to blunt the trap. A memorial service for deceased Gastonia Elks Club members is set for Sunday at 5 PM conducted by Dr W Ward Barr of First Baptist Church.
