Ballot boxes will be placed in nine polling places for an election to fill the soil supervisor post vacated by J. Ray Weatherspoon of Bessemer City R-1. Candidatesare Fred Biggerstaff of Dallas and Hugh Helms of Cherryville R-2, both long active in farm circles and community roles. Helms, 48, runs a 70 acre farm with a general store, cattle, and a soil and water conservation plan. he chairs Mt. Zion Baptist Church ideacons and teaches Sunday school. Biggerstaff, 41, manages the County Home in Dallas and previously supervised Gaston county road maintenance. he heads the Gaston County Farm Bureau and owns 145 acres with 25 cattle. Police Capt. M. Roy Short reports Gastonia recorded 57 city accidents in November involving 114 vehicles. Damages climbed to 25183.59, with 23 injured including five seriously. Superior Court Civil Term To Open Monday
A two week term of civil superior court will open Monday morning in the county court house with P C Fronehberger presiding. This will be his last regular Gaston county bench appearance in the present assignment as he will hold court in Asheville for six months next year. The next Gaston criminal term, also two weeks, opens February 27 with Judge Francis C. Clarkson of Charlotte on the bench.
