County and city workers prepare for vaccination after a public health advisory urges protection of essential staff. Duke England says nearly all county employees volunteering, about 200 people in 14 departments. Dose cost around 30 cents, vaccines ordered by the health department and will be given when received.
Proceeds from the Follies of 1956 will fund equipment for a new school building praised by Junior Women’s Club members at Thursday night’s open house. Principal Connor admires the completed project as classrooms sit on ground level with easy access to a new lunch room and maid service for two special rooms.
Harrison and Ransom describe a new loan bid aimed at aiding veterans in smaller cities, with limited impact in large cities like Charlotte. The Gaston area program will provide direct VA loans after private funding efforts fail, plus accessible facilities and specialized equipment. The Gaston Special Education Foundation and Junior Woman's Club partner in expanding facilities, hiring psychologists, and welcoming mentally retarded and slow-learning students into appropriate programs.
City employees will receive a flu vaccine with 350 doses ordered through the health department at about 30 cents per dose. Gaston Memorial Hospital will set up clinics and inoculate city workers and some non payroll staff free of charge. Hospital staff numbering around 200 will also be vaccinated at no cost. Voluntary participation is encouraged though all vital service workers are urged to vaccinate. total cost expected near 105 dollars for the 350 doses.
A Spencer Mountain woman and two men were bound over to superior court on charges arising from an alleged rape. Rastus Lee, 27, and his brother Lawrence Lee, 26, plus Mary Carpenter, were held on the case with no bond for the men and a $1000 bond for the woman. All residents of Spencer Mountain.

An 11 year old youth waived hearings on seven counts of store breaking and larceny and was bound over to the September term of Gaston County Superior Court. The case involves thefts at Myrtle School Myrtle Arklay Grocery Peedin School R and W Grocery Littlejohns Barbecue Lail’s service station and other sites. Authorities connected the irregularities to a series of break-ins during 1958 and 1936. The court set bond at $1,000.
All pupils from last year at W. P. Grier School report to last year’s home room on Wednesday September 4 at 8 30 am to receive assignments. First time pupils report to the auditorium for assignments. Parents urged to register children before opening day. seventh graders from specific schools exempt. First grades on half day until September 30. shortened schedule for first three days. Cafeteria starts Monday September 9 with full schedules for all grades except beginners.
In a city court Friday morning Mildred Durham's home was searched by Officer Burris and John Sadler for liquor. Burris admitted he found liquor in a trunk but did nothing. the trunk yielded a half gallon. Durham, 48, is mother to eight children, later nine, and received a two year suspended sentence with conditions to avoid any alcohol in the home.
West Germany faces September 15 elections as the Deutsche Reichs party, an unrepentant Nazi-leaning group, campaigns nationwide from the North Sea to the Alps. It holds no seats in the federal parliament and seeks five percent to gain representation, while state observers in Lower Saxony note the party holds six of 161 provincial seats and remains under scrutiny.
