Russell C. Harrington resigned as internal revenue commissioner after nearly three years in the post. The 67 year old Rhode Islander handed his resignation to President Eisenhower, effective September 30, and the President accepted it with regret. The search for a successor begins.
The debate centers on delaying school integration at Central High. Justice Department and Warren weigh constitutional rights against potential violence. Harrington concludes a strong, public relations oriented leadership for the IRS, with personal details of his background and family.
The Stockton reunion will be held Sunday at Camp Hope on Highway 278 between Brevard and Waynesville. A number of Gaston families are descendants of David and Martha Arnold Stockton and will intend the reunion.
Norfolk officials reported a plan to postpone and reassess, aiming for orderly integration as 151 Negro applicants seek entry to white schools. Federal Judge Hoffman asked for test and interview results, with potential pupil assignments by the judge if discrimination is found.
Two young men, Steve Marley Lloyd aged 20 and Boone Moss Black 17, were cited for speeding after a westward chase at Franklin avenue and South York street. A British medical group seeks 1,000 wives to volunteer for a two year world wide trial of a swallowed birth control pill. Dr Berie H Wright of the CIFC said 300 volunteers are already lined up and that US doctors have produced a pill but British experts question its safety. The effort aims to identify a safe, orally taken contraceptive pill.
President Eisenhower's party postponed a Newport trip due to Hurricane Daisy with a new 4 p.m. departure plan. Weather and broader Far East tensions push the stay into question as Mrs. Eisenhower travels likely to New York. Eisenhower may fly by helicopter to Ft Adams if weather allows, with offices on Coasters Harbor Island. The President also moved to clear 99 bills before Congress adjourned.
Gastonia man Henry David Kerksey age 37 is charged with breaking into Washburns Hardware Store in Shelby and stealing several pistols. He was arrested in Columbia South Carolina and transported to Shelby for arraignment. One pistol was recovered at arrest.
Shell Tiger Wang Sheming chief of the Nationalist general staff says Reds have long propagated propaganda and are determined to take Formosa. He notes the Communist broadcasts on the matter and describes the ongoing efforts as scarcely noticed by the public.
At The Hague a US congressman described electronic gear using the moon as an artificial satellite to monitor the entire earth. Rep. James G. Fulton said the system, now being installed, could detect instantaneous ICBM launches or nuclear explosions and would tell what is going on globally.
Winston Salem appears to face a surge of transfer requests as white parents object to three Negro pupils being assigned to Easton Elementary. By yesterday 136 pupils had requested reassignment, about 30 percent of the expected 603 enrollment. On Wednesday the board reassigned 134 Easton students to Waughtown Forest Park and Keanook Hills. Dr A Craig Phillips said he could act on further requests if forms are complete. Rhode Island was the last of the original states to ratify the Constitution.

Gas ton Criminal Superior Court will run two weeks in September instead of one. Solicitor Grady B. Stott secured an extra week to clear a backlog of older cases caused by lengthy trials of Junior Troutman and Roy Barrett in recent sessions. Judge W. H. S. Burgwyn may oversee the special term starting September 22. the regular session begins September 15 with Judge J. Will Press Jr. scheduled for the latter half of 1953.
