The U.S. 10th Circuit reversed seven convictions in a Communist party case, ordering a new trial. The panel ruled the indictment combined two conspiracies, invalidating the conspiracy to organize charge under the Smith Act due to the three year statute of limitations. The seven were convicted in May 1955 after a 1954 indictment.
The Gastonia jail was torn out on Thursday and hauled away by truck to Statesville. Chief G. F. Peninger watched the wrecking in the city hall corridor and smiled as the 10 cells, plumbing, and bench seats left. The city had sold the jail and will share the county jail instead of maintaining its own facility.
No fixed plans exist for the newly available space as the detectives' office, photography room, and identification bureau relocate to the basement, distant from the main hub of police operations.
A 33-year-old Crouse man, J R McClain, was treated at Kines Mountains Hospital after his car overturned at the intersection of North Carolina Routes 274 and 216. The driver, William Edward Saunders, 28, of Kings Mountain, was charged with driving without a license. The 147 sedan, eastbound on 214, missed a curve and left the road around 12:50 am, causing about 20 in damage.
The death of Maj. Rex Gibson of Saanichton B C president of the Alpine Club of Canada occurred in a 250 foot fall on Mt Howson 40 miles east of Here. Fellow climbers say he died at the scene with two others injured in the same incident. A helicopter rescue was planned as Dr Sterling Hendricks Don Hubbard Dr Alex Baberge and Alvin Peterson of Washington and Maryland recounted the accident.
Several members of the local ASC office will attend an area meeting in High Point next week. Scheduled to attend Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are Mrs. May T. New office manager, Dane S. Rhyne county chairman, and Mrs. Viola Cameron and Miss Betty Bridges clerks. Mrs. Violet Bumgardner and Fred Ferguson will attend the meeting on Wednesday only.
Kenneth Davis hosted twenty friends with a wiener roast on Tuesday evening. Charles England improves at home after hospital stay in Charlotte. Kindergarten opens September 4 at Hood Memorial Church with teacher Catherine Henry. registration fee applies for ages three to five and daily transportation provided. Sunday worship at Mt Moriah, Mt. Pleasant, O'Connor's Grove A.M.E., Henry's Chapel AAALE, and Love's Chapel Presbyterian churches with 9:45 a.m. Sunday school and 11 a.m. services. Community notices list various visitors, dinners, and social events including guests from Gastonia, Washington, and Boston, plus a birthday party for Mrs. Crawford at Mona Lake.
A two headed Holstein heifer with four eyes and two mouths was born yesterday on Casimir Sztuba’s farm in Grafton Massachusetts. Dr Wallace Black of the University of Massachusetts notes one mouth feeds while the other mimics the act.

Foote Mineral Company in Kings Mountain lifts secrecy on its lithium bearing mine and open pit operations. Open house invited Sunday from 1 to 5 pm with guided tours of the mill and facilities. plant ships lithium to Virginia and nationwide.
Tyree V. McIntosh Jr a Gastonia civic leader was named governor of Area 9 District 37 Toastmasters International announced by Bill Hylton of High Point. McIntosh a sales rep for Akers Motor Lines and former Gastonia Toastmasters Club leader helped grow clubs in Hickory Shelby and Gastonia.
Mrs Ocie Boyles Smith 50 died at home 1019 West th avenue Friday at 8 pm after brief illness. A Lincoln county native, she spent 15 years in the area. Survived by husband John three brothers Kemp William Oscar Boyles of Lincolnton and three sisters Lucy Loftin Gastonia Nellie Spencer and Lottie Neal Lincolnton. Funeral Sunday at 4 pm Mt Zion Baptist Church pastor officiant burial church cemetery. Body to be returned to home Saturday at 4 pm and viewing at church one hour prior. Carothers Funeral Home in charge.
Belmont police confirm Chief Hoover died by suicide. Coroner’s office aided by Rural Detectives E. H. Groves and J. R. Harris. Hoover, a Mount Holly native, served Belmont as chief for about 31 years and was re elected last May for two more. He was born August 11, 1891, and survived by his wife Eliza Green Cole, five sons, two daughters, a brother, six sisters, and sixteen grandchildren. Public funeral arrangements announced in Belmont.
North Carolina voters approved the Nickels for Know-How program and a new cotton promotion plan in referendums. Unofficial tallies from counties show broad support for continuing the nickel per ton funding for agricultural research and education, and for a 10 cent per bale special assessment to promote cotton. Agriculture Commissioner Ballenline expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome.
In Gaston County farmers approved two measures in Friday referendums. A landslide supported the Nickels for Know-How program for three more years by 187 to 19, while a 10 cent per bale cotton tax passed 67 to 7 to fund cotton promotion. The Agriculture Center had the largest turnout with 35 for the Know-How vote and 6 for the tax. No negative votes were cast. An FBI agent in Watertown resigned to pursue Baptist ministry citing need for religious counsel.

The countries named include Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Liechtenstein, Paraguay, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Yemen. Egypt Guatemala Monaco Portugal and Syria also show restricted women's rights, with sixty nine countries overall moving toward equality.
Corona California. Gene Maxwell age 31 was practicing landings when he lost power and landed on the Santa Fe right of way. After a nearly complete forced landing and a scratched arm injury, Maxwell and bystanders tried to move the two seater off the tracks as a freight train bound for Santa Ana approached. Police labeled it Corona's first air train collision incident.
