In Ravotzhau sen Germany two American supply planes collided during a flight to blockaded Berlin. Four U S fliers were killed in the collision outside the American zone town.
Gaston county establishes a new draft board led by J. Y. Todd Sr. and schedules registration for men ages 18 to 25, starting Monday with locations in towns across the county. Registrars will be chosen, offices sought, and a temporary headquarters to be used with Memorial Hall as a potential site.
Harry Stevenson of Cincinnati Ohio president of the Moulders and Foundry Workers Union of America and a leader in the American Federation of Labor died suddenly in his hotel room in Manchester England on August 24.
Raeford baseball planners printed posters for a Kannapolis game but mis-spelled the visiting team as Charlotte. The error read Baseball Raeford vs. Charlet, after a player suggested the tactic to avoid spelling difficulties.
Marshal Vassily D Sokolovsky announced Germans in the Russian zone will be barred from fall elections. Voting will be postponed for one year, the first delay by any occupying power. Non Communist Christian Democrats and Liberal Democrats protested, while Communists blamed recovery duties. The Soviet zone remains dominated by the SED party.
The so called Lady in Black returned to Rudolph Valentino’s tomb on the 22nd death anniversary and identified herself as Dira Flame, head of the Valentino Memorial Guild. She claimed to have known the actor before his fame, ending years of mystery about the annual Aug 23 flower visits. Valentino died in New York in 1926.
Twenty miners escaped injury at the Rainbow Mining Company mine in Marysville Montana after a cave-in at the 400 to 700 foot levels. Workers used recently completed safety exits to reach ladders or ropes from the emergency channels as 50 feet of track bed collapsed. Company partner W R Wade said the main shaft caved in but the men were unharmed.

Amsterdam August 24 John Foster Dulles warned that Communist policies make it impossible to build a universal peace organization through law. He argued force cannot crush Communism and stressed Christian responsibility in analyzing world affairs.
In Sparta on August 24 a husband, Guy Woodruff, returned home to find his wife attacked by G. P. Lemmon, 35, an escaped prisoner from Ashe County serving 10 years for attempted rape. Woodruff captured Lemmon and dragged him two miles to the sheriff. The woman, 21, fled to a barn after the intruder ripped off her clothes and escaped.

Senate races in these states could tilt control as Dewey Warren and Truman seek electoral votes and potential majorities.
Western envoys led by U S Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith reported progress after a four hour and forty minute Kremlin session with Prime Minister Stalin Molotov and allies. The informant said technical issues remain and will require substantial negotiation. He testified behind closed doors and officials indicated he would discuss relations between Whittaker Chambers and Alger Hiss. Tomorrow Chambers and Hiss confront each other in the public session.
Raleigh Aug 24 A Negro convict who escaped from a Franklin county road gang with two others was fatally wounded by a guard last night in Granville county. Robert Spivey 27 died at Central Prison hospital from internal bleeding after a chest wound. A coroner's inquest was planned as authorities hunted the remaining two fugitives Raymond Williams 20 and Alfred Jones 17.
Two admissions were reported Tuesday morning at North Carolina Orthopaedic Hospital, one from Gaston and one from Catawba, bringing Gaston’s total polio cases for the year to 77. The latest local case is 10 year old Jerry Wayne Price of Cherryville admitted Monday afternoon. Burial was held yesterday for Leonard David Armstrong two months old son of Leonard Armstrong of A-11 Stanley. The child, admitted Saturday, died Sunday. This is Gaston county’s ninth polio fatality. The hospital has moved 11 patients to Camp Sutton convalescent unit near Monroe to free space for emergencies.
