The Flares from Gastonia advanced to the national Battle of the Bands finals after surviving multiple elimination rounds in Boston. Ten finalists, including state champions from Idaho Utah New Jersey Texas Michigan Wisconsin Colorado and Massachusetts, prepared for the semi final rounds with judges from major labels and industry figures. The band led by Edward Blair with members David Proud Wayne Sigman Molly Howard Gary Mauney Tim Frye Johnny Osshart Lillian Clemmer and Toni Cloninger drew praise from Decca Records and Les Brown while early national coverage highlighted strong impressions and potential record deals. The Flares earned the North Carolina title earlier in Durham.

Brenda Davidson, Miss Clover, won the Miss Southern Textile title at Mount Holly High School Auditorium. Sallie Thomason was first runner up and Terri Culp second runner up. Davidson listed future plans to study dentistry at UNC and travel, emphasizing education before marriage. About 250 attended. judges named five finalists including Mercia Ross and Sally Stowe.

Debbie Froneberger, a Hunter Huss High School graduate with blue eyes and musical talent, was named Miss Gastonia 1968. She impressed with a Swiss themed talent Medley on accordion and received a 900 scholarship from the Jaycees. First runner up Candace Shermer won 250, second runner up Lynn Maxon won 100.
