Anna Christina Brunnemer, 3 years 4 months, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Brunnemer of 41 South Willow street, won the first baby sister beauty contest at the Gastonia boys club Friday night. She received 10 dollars in merchandise and an escort was H. K. Brunnemer Jr. Runner-up was 2-year-old Mary Carl Rice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Rice of 1005 East Walnut avenue, with 5 dollars in merchandise and a pocket watch for her escort.
Renovations at Temple Emanuel Synagogue at South Street and Third Avenue are in progress with an estimated cost of 16 000 to 17 000 dollars. Replastering, interior painting, and a new asphalt tile basement floor are planned, plus water damage repairs and outer walls on three sides. Roy Dixon supervises the Gastonia contractor, work began two weeks ago, and completion is set for September 15. The 1926 building now serves about 50 family units under Rabbi Jerome Mark.

Gaston county 4-H clubbers near Boiling Springs wrapped a week of dramatics handicraft and music with a big night exhibition. Sixty plus youth from 22 clubs performed plays displayed handiwork and sang. They stay at Gardner-Webb College dorms and resume home this weekend.
In Columbus Ohio Mary Lou Barnes a 19 year old OSU sophomore diagnosed with poliomyelitis returned to class after one injection of an unnamed drug. Her mother and doctor describe a rapid improvement though the physician refused to claim the drug cured polio, asserting only that the patient recovered.

Dr Robert F McLeod Jr a Missouri minister and South Carolina native will be the next speaker in The Presbyterian Hour at 830 am Sunday The broadcast theme Christ and His Church airs on WSOC Charlotte and 93 stations across the Southeast and Southwest The Presbyterian Hour choir directed by Hubert Vance Taylor will sing Dr McLeod president of Centre College and former pastor in Louisville Grenada and Winter Haven has studied at Edinburgh Columbia and McCormick Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1926 through Louisville Presbytery

Arturs Barda, his wife, and two sons escaped Russian and Nazi persecution after living as refugees in Germany.
