DETROW AP The nation’s auto industry edged toward a possible crippling strike as the United Auto Workers rejected new three year contract proposals from General Motors Ford and Chrysler. The UAW leadership will pick a target among the Big Three at a Chicago meeting. Proposals called for higher wages earlier retirement and larger pensions. The unions declared the offers terrible and unacceptable and workers began to vote on strike authorization as contract deadlines approached.

A bus carrying 65 members of the Disciples of Christ chapel of Canyon Church of Canora Park Calif crashed into seven vehicles and a palm tree after a tire blew on Slaughter Alley six miles south of San Clemente. Eight died, including Deborah Lee Thagers, the adopted daughter of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, and Deborah’s friend Joan Li Ta Li. About 40 were injured, some in serious condition, as the vehicle crossed the highway median and struck a line of cars. The group had been en route to donate food and clothing to La Esperanza Orphanage in Tijuana. The Rev Lawes reception White, pastor, was among the injured or absent.
