The Gazette celebrates its "Little Sunday" turning one year old on August 19 1962 with a hometown tribute. The town recalls her first year from growth of Gastonia to new and old landmarks and the fan club that grew around the famous baby.
Marta Oates, 18, a sophomore at Woman's College in Greensboro, won Miss Gastonia 4064 after competing against 190 entrants. She earns a $300 scholarship and will represent Gastonia in Miss North Carolina, with potential to enter Miss America. Her talent was a piano piece despite a broken ankle, and she wore a white satin gown.
Gastonia crowned Marty Oates Miss Gastonia 1934 after she answered judges questions with calm poise. She emphasized holding shoulders back and keeping knees from shaking while in swimsuit, and defined qualities of charm grace and poise for the representative role.
The Gazette anniversary edition highlights the year’s top events from a transition to an eight page Sunday issue. It recalls grim accidents including a bridge collision that killed two Gaston men, political upsets, local merchants, Gazette personalities, new county towns, and notable social figures.
A speeding car stripped the bridge railing and plunged 20 to 25 feet into a creek near Bethesda Highway. Willard Leather, 37, of Cramerton, and Thomas Dennis Campbell, 48, of North Belmont, died. A Shelby couple, C. B. and Mrs Deaton, escaped serious injury. they were hospitalized. Campbell owned the car, believed to be the driver. Two other back-seat occupants were injured. The crash occurred about 2:30 pm, and rescuers had to cut the seat to free Leather and Campbell. Campbell died en route to Gaston Memorial Hospital. The Deatons survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigating officer was State Patrolman J. C. Gordie. The article also notes FDA antibiotic policy discussions related to a separate notice.
