The Donald Levigne Company of Miami won the city winter uniform contract, supplying 15 uniforms including 1 policeman, 5 plainclothes detectives, and 9 firemen for $3,784.72 after council overruled Sam Sapperstein’s protest.
City Manager James Carter announced Gastonia will open a new city operated parking lot within 30 days at the Pearson lot on South York Street across from the health department to hold 45 cars. Another lot beside First Baptist Church on Franklin Avenue will offer 400 spaces in the near future. City council approved a contract for 150 coin meters at 49.50 dollars each from Duncan Parking Meter Company. The board also approved multiple vehicle and heavy equipment contracts for police, street, utilities, and other departments and authorized curb and gutter work on Townsend Avenue.
Flags fly at the Spindle-Center Fair Office where the fair runs September 12 to 17. Sponsored by the Gaston County Farm Bureau, the office opened this week and is run by Robert S. Thomas. Contact VA 4-8371.
The Rev A A Bailey will assume the pastorate at Bessemer City First Baptist Church, succeeding Rev Fred Forester. Bailey, a 1948 Southern Baptist Seminary graduate, has pastored Centerview Baptist in North Belmont for eight years. He will begin August 28 with wife and two children, in a renovated parsonage. The church counts over 1,000 members and an average Sunday attendance of more than 500.
Gaston county agricultural agencies met in the ASC office to map plans for the 1956 agricultural conservation program. Fourteen practices were approved for the coming year, including permanent pasture, vegetative cover, liming, contour farming, forest planting and improvements, sod waterways, terracing, drainage, winter and summer cover crops, mineral application, and open ditch work. A county-specific minerals practice may be added in spring and fall 1956 to address local pasture needs.
Wesleyan Methodist ministers for churches in the Gastonia district will keep their pastorates for another year. No changes occurred in the county churches at the 76th annual conference held in Colfax last week. Appointments to 109 churches across North and South Carolina and Virginia were announced Friday.
A Thursday 3:30 meeting in the Cham ber of Commerce Building will map plans for Business Industry Education Day in Gastonia. The annual event invites city teachers to tour plants, with the latter part of September set for the day. Robert Caldwell will chair the BIE committee and preside at the meeting to discuss high school vocational guidance as a new feature.
Gastonia allocates 650000 to 91 day U S Treasury notes at 1.80 percent and 46000 of debt reserve funds to certificates at two percent. Both investments arranged through Citizens National Bank and not needed for at least three months.
Negotiations between Western Electric and the Communications Workers of America in Winston-Salem resumed with slight progress reported from last night. Nine contract points, including wages, remain unsettled as about 5,800 workers in Winston-Salem Greensboro and Burlington work without a contract after the old one expired at midnight Saturday. Ben Nevis in Scotland is listed as 4 406 feet high as Great Britain's tallest mountain.
