Babe Ruth remains critically ill in New York as doctors report a restless night and pulmonary complications. Hospital attaches said the ailing homerun king is still on the critical list, with no clear improvement noted in the morning bulletin.
In Berlin, the Soviet controlled press acknowledged severe food shortages in the Soviet zone of Germany. In Stockholm Count Folke Bernadotte, UN mediator, urged a six week truce in Palestine to allow peaceful settlement. He expected results by mid October and said maintaining the truce is the hardest part of his task. Fighting persisted in Jerusalem as he sought an end to the conflict and promised aid for 400,000 Arab refugees.
