The Gastonia Gazette reports Roosevelt Parks states that if ABC Referendum passes the City Council would place the proceeds in the General Fund for any approved use. They plan to allocate funds to recreation, teacher pay supplements, housing, street improvements, and earmark a portion for law enforcement and rehabilitation.

FBI director J Edgar Hoover released the 1966 crime report showing the nation’s crime rate rising 43 percent since 1960 and violent crime up 11 percent last year. The tally estimated 3.25 million serious crimes, including about 10,920 homicides, with auto theft and larceny leading property offenses.
A wartime dispatch reports three American soldiers killed in an ambush by Communist forces in Korea. The incident follows heightened tensions as U N and allied units continue operations along the front.
TAMIFAX NC A prison bus transporting 30 inmates between camps was hijacked early today. 21 inmates surrendered, while eight remained at large. The driver was forced from the vehicle at 3 30 am and the bus abandoned within an hour. Robbery, escape, and riot actions spurred a Florida governor broadcast confrontation during later coverage.
An official canvass of the vote in Lincolnton shows two thirds support for liquor stores with 1.87 percent for and 0.7 percent against. Aldermen in Lincolnton debate taxicab issues as a sea story appears on page 1. Dr. J M Morris named trustee at North Carolina Orthopedic Hospital Board, page 1c.
Gaston County Young Republican Club plans a civil court meeting at the Gaston County Courthouse at 7:30 p.m. The Holland Memorial Lodge No 600 will host a communication at the Masonic Temple.
U S Navy jets shot down two MiG jets over North Vietnam in daylight for the first time in two weeks. The U S Command reported 40 civilians killed and 36 wounded nine days earlier in the Mekong delta as helicopters came under enemy fire. The MiG downing came from Phantoms aboard the carrier Constellation. Casualties and ground fighting showed a lull, with weekly U S casualties of 146 killed and 1 063 wounded and 24 missing or captured, while South Vietnamese losses rose. Major actions focused on the Song Re valley and Route 4 mining by Viet Cong forces near Saigon. President Johnson aides forecast renewed ally momentum by year end, and civilian candidates pressed for secure travel as presidential race campaigning paused.
AP report says three U.S. soldiers died and about 15 were wounded in a North Korean ambush on the western front of Korea, with at least one South Korean wounded. The attack, near Seoal about 35 miles north of the border, involved grenades and automatic weapons. An American patrol was fired on again nearby in a separate incident. Casualties for Communist forces were not released. The 2nd Division, guarding Panmunjom area, has seen several border clashes since last November.
Greenville News Fleemont Co Asheville Citizens Times Publishing Co and Southeastern Broadcasting Corp of Greenville weigh a merger. Directors of the three firms recommended the consolidation which would require stockholder approval and Federal Communications Commission authorization.
A gas main blast at a concession stand near Rocklawn Industries leveled a small building in Bamberg South Carolina at 6 40 am. One man Sam Bunch hospitalized with non life threatening injuries. The nearby Rocklawn plant sustained heavy damage to its three story office, windows shattered for three blocks around. Residents reported a jet plane like roar. The stand had operated for 23 years and a gas line had been capped nearby earlier in the week.
