George C Wallace makes a two day visit to North Carolina under the American Independent ticket with fund raising events planned in Burlington Winston Salem and a prior Charlotte crowd of 12000. State leaders from both parties express concern over his rising popularity and potential impact on the general election.
Montgomery AP Wallace says Nixon would not win any Southern states because his positions align with Democratic views on schools and domestic institutions. He plans no change to campaign while naming possible sites for the American Independent convention and noting ballot qualifications in 37 states amid petition drives in Ohio New York and Wisconsin.

At the 29th Republican National Convention in Miami Beach Richard Nixon secured Agnew as his running mate amid mixed delegate reaction. Agnew received 1,128 votes to Romney’s 178 with 12 scattered. Rockefeller and Rhodes urged line adherence. Nixon promised victory and vowed to focus on Vietnam and crime while Agnew pledged a vigorous campaign and said he looked forward to sharing in an administration with broad responsibility for states and cities.
