Study says drugs hurt prisoners
A two year study of about 60 women’s institutions finds many female inmates are routinely given drugs not always medically necessary. Researchers warn drug dependency and pill-popping habits upon release, noting high usage of tranquilizers and mood elevators in prisons and jails across multiple states. The California Youth Project, funded with 293000 dollars from LEAA, examined 1975 and 1976 conditions, citing San Francisco Jail as an example where 98 percent of prisoners received drugs.
