Betty Jo Moss Yelton 52 of 1925 Taytay Dr. died Friday in Gaston Memorial Hospital. Survived by husband James Roy Yelton two sons James Michael and Thomas Bruce two sisters and two grandchildren. Funeral at First Baptist Church with burial in Hatcher Gardens. John Gardner Sr 100 of Mount Holly died Thursday. Survived by sons Ben and Jerry, daughters Leola and Gretchen, many grandchildren. Funeral Sunday at New Providence Baptist Church. The family will receive friends. Wilma Brown Ingel of Mount Holly also survived by her father. Frank Anderson McGee 58 of Gastonia died Thursday. Survived by mother Addie McGee. Michael Edward Isenhour 17 of Sherills Ford died Thursday in Charlotte. Survived by parents and siblings. Funeral 3 p.m. Chapman Memorial Baptist Church. James Harold Farris 71 of Clover died Friday at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Survived by widow Lottie, daughter Betty Dean Howell, sisters, grandchildren. Funeral Sunday at Mt. Ford and Sons. Rev. Melvin Franklin Knox died Friday. Surviving wife Alma, children, siblings, grandchildren. Patricia Ann Brazil alias Patricia Byrum found dead in Charlotte apartment. Beaten and body set afire. Survived by husband Willie Brazil, two sons, daughter Shenna, mother Ada Gilmore, siblings. Funeral Monday United House of Prayer for All People, Gastonia. Burial Rosehill Cemetery. SAN FRANCISCO AP Fire swept through remote wilderness near the Big Sur resort area burning about 35 000 acres and imperiling watersheds vital to drought recovery. Some blazes merged in the Los Padres National Forest as 2 700 firefighters battled 300 fires across northern California. Officials warned watershed damage could reach tens of millions, with impacts on Carmel Valley Big Sur recreation and Salinas Valley agriculture as soils erode and mud flows threaten downstream areas.
Mt Etna erupts with two lava streams each over eight miles long shining through the ash. Authorities say one flow heads toward Randazzo, a 14,000 resident town about two miles north, but there is no immediate danger to people or farmland.
