Howard Hughes finances a system to extract minerals from the ocean floor. A Hughes ship has left Philadelphia to begin underwater mining expected to yield about 5,000 tons daily. The device, built by Sun Ship Co., will operate at depths around 16,000 feet and use compressed air to raise rocks rich in manganese nickel and copper.
