In a Bronx flareup during a weekend police drive, two youths were attacked near 161st Street and Prospect Avenue. George Marshall, 18, was fatally stabbed. Richard Vaughan, 15, escaped serious injury after reporting the assault by a group of Black youths. Earlier, a 15-year-old white boy was killed in Washington Heights with another injured, linked to the same gang activity.
John A Sherrill 6 of 39 North Main Avenue Davidson died Friday at 0:20 am in a Charlotte hospital. Surviving include wife May, two children Jobby and Marie Cameron, brothers Ernest and Connie, sisters Roberta Moss and Mrs Luther Senter. Funeral Sunday 3 pm Moore's Chapel Church with church cemetery burial.
The Gastonia City Council will not meet next Tuesday August 6 due to work completed at the prior Tuesday special meeting. City Manager Jim Carter said there is no meeting next week, and the council will not convene until Tuesday August 26.
