Richard Overcash, a nine year old with cerebral palsy in Spencer Mountain, received a growing wheelchair funded by the local United Fund through the United Cerebral Palsy Association. The chair, fitted in Charlotte, allows growth and future use by others. donors and community leaders organized the purchase after the Overcash story appeared in The Gazette. Richard’s family and doctors see improving mobility as he gains strength in his arms.

Two Dallas men enlist in the Navy per the local recruiting office. Rodney M. Costner and Donald J. Armour, sons of Dallas residents, are graduates of Dallas High School and qualified under the High School Graduate Training program. Costner to general service school. Armour to electronics after basic training at Great Lakes.
A private first class driving a truck in France deserted, vanished, and faced court martial. Powers escaped a stockade, lived with Yvette for 14 years, fathered several children with English names, hid at home at night, and was finally discovered by regional police during a traffic inquiry. He surrendered to a U S Army prison on March 22.

Bill Van Sleen an 18 year old Gastonia boy injured in a skiing accident Tuesday is in fair condition today. His father said he spent a painful night but is as well as could be expected. He has developed a cough causing concern, but doctors hope no complications will arise. Bill suffered four broken ribs and a punctured lung after colliding with the Catawba pine plier. part of one lung was removed in an emergency operation.
Wink Handsel son of the Stanley chief of police was admitted to a Monroe hospital after a car collision near there Friday morning. Gaston Rural Police said the young man, recently discharged service man, had a head injury and a broken leg. He is in serious condition but not believed critically hurt. Chief Ralph Handsel, informed via Highway Patrol radio, left for Monroe.
City police hold 59 year old Macon Georgia man Frank W Kimball on two forgery counts. Investigators believe more checks may be in circulation signed by various merchants or others. Anyone with similar checks should contact Lt L G Haskett at Gastonia police.
Roy Fred Hardin 2152 West Sixth Avenue claimed a 95 mph drive on North Chester Street to charge his battery. Officers Crow and Cantrell pursued him. Judge Shive opted for 30 days in lieu of a $100 fine and costs.
Lloyd Daniel Norton a three-year-old from 104 North Washington Street ran into an American taxi at the Washington Street Overman Avenue intersection about 4 10 pm. He was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital with bruises to the forehead right leg and left side. Driver James R Revels 30 of Matiney Avenue transported the child to the hospital.

A young man bound over to superior court waived a city court hearing on larceny charges. Detectives say Jesse James from North Rhynes Street admitted taking expensive watches from Roy's, Inc, with several watches recovered from a pawn shop and elsewhere.
Johnston Island would host short range defensive missiles with nuclear warheads traveling under 200 miles. The missile type was not disclosed but described as defensive and linked to Talos Nike Hercules or Nike Zeus test vehicles. The Pacific Series marked its 15th explosion since April 24, with Eniwetok the prior blasts, and the Johnston danger zone to stay offshore for three to four weeks with ships warned to keep clear.
Gastonia Rotary Club members viewed the film Cotton at their Ma sonic Temple meeting. The movie, produced by Cotton Council International and the U S Department of Agriculture, traces cotton from planting to finished cloth with vivid research aided visuals. W D Lawson III Elmer Spenser and Charles Zeipler led the program. Frank Suggs presided.
