Four Cars Leave Reils In West Virginia Express Mishap
BERKELEY SPRINGS W Va Aug 1 Four part pit cars left the Baltimore end of a mud railroad track yesterday during the Chicago Express as it climbed a mountain grade at 50 miles an hour. Railroad officials said only one passenger, not identified, was injured seriously enough to be taken from the train. Others received on site treatment for minor injuries.

New Beer Sale Rules Take Effect in Raleigh
Raleigh August 1 regulations by the state ABC board restrict beer advertising signs outside retailers and ban public beer drinking after 11:30 p.m. Beer and containers must be cleared from tables by 11:30. Winners Announced In Guessing Contest at Hayes Store
Hayes Food Store announced four winners from a last week guessing contest on how long two 300-pound ice cakes would melt in the window. First prize of 7.50 in groceries went to G. F. Bontelle of 104 West Second Avenue and Mrs. Ola Ballard of South Broad Street. Second prize of 5 in groceries went to William P. Lee of 209 West Long Avenue and Mrs. H. F. Glenn of South Oakland Street. The ice melted in 62 hours and four minutes.
Tobacco curers head to Canada from North Carolina
About 1500 Tar Heel tobacco curers will work in Canada over the next two months, mainly in Ontario and Quebec. Most are repeaters who have gone before, seeking to supplement income when home demand is low. North Carolina sends more curers than Georgia, Florida, and Virginia combined.

Weekend Arrests Report 41 People Jailed
Assault, larceny, drunkenness and other charges led to 41 arrests over the weekend. Nine teens booked for drunken counts. Helen Leach Grier, 19, of 701 North York, detained for larceny from Bayliss Department Store and Matthews Belk. She admitted thefts after arrest by Officers Sarver and Terry. Grier suspected of having a lookout partner who escaped. Grier observed committing theft by store employee. Robert Kendrick, 22, of Tanyard Row, jailed for drunken driving. Albert Rainey, 21, Gastonia, charged with hit and run and drunken driving after car struck Thomas Gaddy’s vehicle near the ball park. Rainey reportedly continued before Rural Officers Beam and Williams captured him. Other city arrests include Ben Hope, 32, West Walnut, for assault on Marsella Hope. Paul Edward Bryant, 23, of West Allison, for speeding, reckless driving and no operator’s license. J. L. Jenkins, 22, North Dallas, for assault on Marion Jenkins.

James William Reid, 22, died when his car overturned near Union Grove in Trede ll county.

Applications from former service women are being accepted for the next Women’s Army Corps Officer Candidate School class at Camp Lee Virginia starting October 3 1949. Prior service women may apply until August 15 1949 and must be 19 to 28 years old single with two years of college or pass an educational qualification test.
