North Carolina law enforcement officers lose a federal program supplying firearms grenade launchers and armored vehicles. The suspension saved taxpayers money but local departments want the option restored after Obama called for a program review amid Ferguson riots.
A county inventory shows amounts of arms and vehicles including 118 rifles 26 pistols 5 grenade launchers 3 shotguns 3 utility trucks and 1 armored vehicle tied to county Lincoln with 6 rifles also recorded.
Gaston County Sheriff's Office notes 10 M16 rifles and 8 M14 rifles in use as needed. Capt. Gary Williams states the program is suspended but rifles may remain in service despite the pause.
Capt. Curtis Rosselle said the Gaston County Police replaced 24 Vietnam era M16 rifles from full auto to semi auto for road use. The guns have now been stored and will be returned once state officials specify when and where.
Gastonia Police report receiving 38 M16 rifles 4 M14 rifles 1 armored unit 5 M79 grenade launchers and multiple utility trucks. Launchers are for less lethal options not grenades while rifles cover patrol rapid deployment or active shooter responses. Additional gear includes shotguns helmets flak jackets camouflage clothing and vehicles distributed among county departments.
Gastonia leaders abandon plans to buy a 314 acre tract off Union New Hope Road for a public shooting park. Some residents welcome the move while others hint the site could be revisited by future councils. the price tag above 5 million dollars is cited as the barrier. City officials continue seeking rural land to relocate Rankin Lake’s skeet and trap ranges into a larger facility.
