GASTONIA The closing of Southern College follows a history of trouble involving Judy and Ron Reed. In 1983 they left Cecil’s College in Asheville after basketball players with grade trouble were given A’s in a history course not taught that term. Reed was admissions director and coach. Mrs Reed dean of academics. The Reeds, owners since 1985, vanished after the college closed, shocking students and faculty as fall classes had just begun.
