Why are black bears so common along the NC coast
Black bears, the only NC species, are found coast to coast with a population larger in the coastal plain than the mountains. Since the 1970s bear sanctuaries and management boosted numbers to more than 20,000 statewide, with over half in the east, aided by crop foods, mild climate, and protected habitats. The largest NC bear on record weighed 880 pounds and was shot in Craven County in 1998.

Alaska man charged with threats against Supreme Court judges
Panos Anastasiou, 76, of Anchorage, faces nine counts of threatening a federal judge and 13 counts of interstate threats after allegedly sending more than 465 messages to the Supreme Court website. He risks up to 10 years per judge threat and five years per interstate threat if convicted.
