Greg Floyd, a pastor and Gastonia fire marshal for 30 years, retired last week. He received the key to the city at a surprise party hosted by his wife Joyce. Floyd began his fire service in 1984 after pursuing a lifelong dream to be a firefighter.
On his first shift Floyd tackled a mill fire from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. He crawled through smoke, swung a sledgehammer to break brick walls, and emerged dehydrated and discouraged. A friend offered encouragement, noting not all days will be so hard.
