Gaston soldier's Purple Heart finally reunites with family
An anonymous envelope delivered to Purple Hearts Reunited in Vermont carried William Julian Barnes’s Purple Heart. Barnes, a Gaston County Marine who served in World War II and helped found the Paw Creek VFW, died in Dallas in 2006. His medal was returned in August at a VFW ceremony, delighting his children who recalled his wartime service and pride.
