A six year old boy with autism who disappeared from Rankin Lake Park in September likely died by accidental drowning. He was described as nonverbal and enjoyed outdoors. The extensive search involved Gaston County agencies, FBI, and State Bureau of Investigation until the body was found near the park in three feet of water.
After Maddox Ritch vanished at Rankin Lake Park Gastonia his body was found in a creek near the park. The North Carolina Medical Examiner ruled the death an accidental drowning with no signs of foul play. The FBI offered a 10000 dollar reward and communities held vigils as police searched lakeside landfill and nearby facilities.
