County leaders choose jail expansion over ankle monitor plan
Gaston County commissioners voted 5-2 to deny the Sheriff's Office $182,000 for an ankle bracelet program that would let some inmates remain at home while awaiting trial. Sheriff Alan Cloninger said the program could reduce jail crowding, but opponents feared inmates could cut GPS monitors and commit crimes. The board instead approved about $674,000 for pre expansion work at the jail.
