Original Toys for Tots Ride fuels Gastonia charity tradition
Hundreds of bikers from Gaston County and nearby areas rode in the Original Toys for Tots Motorcycle Ride from the Erwin Center to Eastridge Mall to deliver toys for The Salvation Army. Gerald Tate founded the event 32 years ago, drawing riders in leather jackets to donate at least one toy each, with police escort and a Salvation Army box truck assisting the effort that supports about 900 Angel Tree children and 800 to 1,000 anticipated toys.

Detour limits Lake Wylie access via Pole Branch Road closure
A Friday to Monday detour will affect travel from Gaston County to Lake Wylie. Pole Branch Road will close to through traffic from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, directing drivers onto Union-New Hope Road and Union Road to reach S.C. 274. The work to widen Pole Branch Road and bridges began in May as part of Blythe Development’s $30 million project along 3.8 miles.

Gastonia extends mayoral term to four years on 2019 ballot
Gastonia city leaders vote 4 to 1 to-lengthen the mayoral term from two to four years starting with the 2019 municipal election. Mayor Walker Reid lobbied for the change while council members Kellogg Kirlin Stepp and Humphries supported it. Pierce opposed it. Chief City Attorney Ash Smith called a petition drive unlikely to overturn the decision.
