Gaston College switches tests to place remedial math needs
Gaston College replaced the Compass placement test with the Accuplacer in 2012-13 to better assess students for remedial math. Critics say the new test questions can be confusing and may affect how long students stay in noncredit math courses before earning degree credit.

Veteran accosted over Purple Hearts at airport
Gastonia veteran Jack Hughes says a man claiming to be in the Marine Corps yelled at him at Charlotte Douglas International Airport accusing him of faking his Purple Hearts. The confrontation was filmed. Hughes says the incident was humiliating and he feared for his safety as the man grabbed his jacket. Police say there could be possible charges, but immediate arrest was not made.
