Mountain Island forest opens first education center soon
Ground broken near Stanley on Mountain Island Educational State Forest as North Carolina officials begin construction of a 6000 square foot center on a roughly 3 million budget. The facility will house classrooms, exhibits, offices and restrooms, enabling new trails and outdoor classrooms such as a "talking trees" feature.

Democrats Robert Kellogg of Gastonia and Republican John Torbett of Stanley seek the 108th House District seat in the North Carolina General Assembly. Neighbor’s gunfire kills mother as son testifies at trial
Jeffrey Oaks Jr. testified that neighbor Robert Bridges pulled a gun on his parents Myla Oaks and Jeffrey Oaks Sr. at their Mann Court home on January 27 2016. Myla died at the hospital and Jeffrey Sr. survived crippled and barely able to speak. Bridges’ defense argues he acted to protect his life.
