Democrats pushed a large deficit-reduction tax increase through the House by 219 to 213 with all Republicans opposing. The bill advances to a difficult Senate battle as Clinton hails the win from the Oval Office after a day of intense lobbying and a final plea from Speaker Foley.
Bosko Brkic and Admira Ismic, aged 25, were buried side by side in the hills above Sarajevo after attempting a daylight escape from besieged Sarajevo near the parliament building. Bosko was killed by machine gun fire. Admira died after cradling him. Their deaths echo a modern Romeo and Juliet.
The Gaston County murder trial of David Lynch concluded after nearly five weeks as Superior Court Judge Claude Sitton praised jurors. Lynch was sentenced to death for killing Bobby Anderson and his 12 year old daughter India. Johnnie Mae Parker, mother and grandmother of Lynch’s victims, cried and thanked District Attorney Mike Sands after the verdict.
In Gastonia Superior Court Judge Claude Litton sentenced David Lynch to death after a 22 hour jury deliberation ending July 30 execution date. Lynch killed India Anderson and her father Bobby in a December 1991 Marsdale Drive shootout that left five wounded and resulted in 23 other convictions.
Dessie Kirk, 82, returned from errands to find a burglar loading clothes, jewelry and cosmetics into a suitcase. She confronted the intruder in a closet, kicked off a struggle through the house and outside, as Brevard County deputies described the confrontation.
Michael Jordan denied staying up in Atlantic City until 2:30 a.m. before the Bulls lost to the Knicks, insisting he was in his room by 1 a.m. He acknowledged going to Atlantic City with his father and friends, said he lost less than $2,000, and vowed to sue those who claimed otherwise.
